RC+ Stat Stumper: 105 mph contact

Welcome to RC+ Stat Stumper!

We’re taking a longtime ballpark tradition and giving a modern twist. At Great American Ball Park, the Scoreboard Stumper trivia question tests your knowledge of baseball history and learn a little bit about the Reds as well. Here, every week, we will post a question about the Reds related to a newer statistic.

We invite you to post your guesses in the comments (no looking up the answers, please). The correct answers and winners will be revealed prior to first pitch that day. Enjoy and thanks for playing!

RC+ Stat Stumper #3:

Aristedes Aquino has made headlines in his short time as a major leaguer, setting records for reaching 8 and 9 home runs faster than any other player in baseball history. Less notably, he had the 82nd game since 2015 in which a single Reds player hit two batted balls with an exit velocity of 105 mph or greater.

Of the 16 players that have accomplished this feat, three of those players account for over half of the 82 games (46 to be exact). Name those three players.

Matt Habel

Matthew Habel was born and mostly raised in Cincinnati and was always a Reds fan growing up. Ironically, he did not become die-hard until moving to Pittsburgh after college and experiencing the 2013 Wild Card game behind enemy lines. While the "Cueto Game" is one of the worst sports moments of his life, he became enamored with the analytics side of the game after reading Big Data Baseball and watching the Pirates organization end their postseason drought. He started writing for Redleg Nation in 2017 and has enjoyed continuously learning more about the sport. He currently lives in Portland, Oregon where he loves exploring the great outdoors. This is a crazy tough question. I’ve got EIGHT candidates on my list to narrow down to three. Not on my list of eight: Billy Hamilton, Jose Peraza, Arismendy Alcantara

  2. Ryan says:

The first two that came to mind were Duvall and Suarez. I’ll stick with those two. I’m going out on a limb and going with Bruce as my third. So Duvall, Suarez and Bruce.

    • Steve Mancuso says:

Suarez will be in my final three. Duvall and Bruce are on my list of eight. Votto on my list, too. He doesn’t hit the ball as hard, but unlike all the others, he’s played on the Reds the entire time since 2015. That’s a big edge for a compiling stat. This is a really good stumper.

  3. Matt Wilkes says:

This one is definitely a stumper. Only player I’m confident in is Suarez. For the other two, I’m going with Adam Duvall and — gonna go out of the box here — Scott Schebler.

  4. Steve Mancuso says:

Matt stole my out-of-the-box pick. I’m going with Suarez, Schebler and Yasiel Puig.

  5. R Smith says:

Schebler hit the ball really hard for a year and a half+ until he hurt his shoulder .This is a who doesn’t get cheated at the plate question.

I’m going Suarez 1 Schebler 2 and Puig 3. Duvall had lots of gapb homers… Bruce and Frazier got traded… Votto approach isn’t swing for the fences every at bat.

  6. Steve Mancuso says:

Other players I gave serious consideration: Votto (for playing all 5 years), Scooter (lots of dingers, but low side of hard-hit balls), Jesse Winker (missed time).

  7. Matt Habel says:

Great guesses everyone, we have two winners! Both R Smith and Steve correctly guessed Schebler (26!), Suarez (11) and Puig (9).

Other notables include Frazier (8), Winker (5), Bruce (5), Duvall (4), Votto (4) and Dietrich (3).

    Thanks for playing!
