Reds Baseball: Get your day off to a great stat!

The Reds have three starters in the top 30 in FanGraphs WAR for pitchers:

  • 2.7 WAR Trevor Bauer
  • 2.7 WAR Sonny Gray
  • 2.6 WAR Luis Castillo

The only other teams with three pitchers in the top 30 are the Houston Astros, LA Dodgers and Washington Nationals. The Brewers have one, Cubs have one, Cardinals none and Pirates none.

Steve Mancuso is a lifelong Reds fan who grew up during the Big Red Machine era. He’s been writing about the Reds for more than ten years. Steve’s fondest memories about the Reds include attending a couple 1975 World Series games, being at Homer Bailey’s second no-hitter and going nuts for Jay Bruce at Clinchmas. Steve was also at all three games of the 2012 NLDS, but it’s too soon to talk about that.

The Reds have only had three 3+ WAR starters 19 times, the last of which was 1992 (Rijo, Swindell, Belcher). They have had four 3+ WAR starters 5 times. Desclafani would have to have a pretty impressive last two months to hit 3 WAR (currently at 1.6).
