RC+ Recap: Reds 9th inning rally falls short

Trailing 7-5 in the last of the 9th, Joey Votto and Eugenio Suarez led off the inning with singles. A walk to Phillip Ervin (the Reds ninth walk of the game) loaded the bases. Aristides Aquino was robbed on a line drive to RF with a 60% hit probability. The rally fell short as the Reds dropped the first game of a 3-game series against Arizona.

Suarez hit his 42nd home run of the season. Votto had two hits and two walks. Alex Blandino, batting in the leadoff spot again, had a hit and three walks and scored three runs. In addition to driving in a first-inning run on a double, Aristides Aquino had the hardest hit ball (109.2 mph) in the game, with two runners on in the 7th inning. It traveled 268 feet and had a 90% hit probability. Unfortunately, it was right at the Diamondbacks’ right fielder.

Steve Mancuso is a lifelong Reds fan who grew up during the Big Red Machine era. He’s been writing about the Reds for more than ten years. Steve’s fondest memories about the Reds include attending a couple 1975 World Series games, being at Homer Bailey’s second no-hitter and going nuts for Jay Bruce at Clinchmas. Steve was also at all three games of the 2012 NLDS, but it’s too soon to talk about that.

Congrats to Joey Votto on scoring 1000 runs in his career. Double #400 is 1 away.
