With our new feature “Get Your Day Off to a Good Stat” we hope to shine a simple spotlight on a Reds statistic that is interesting, important or surprising. Maybe all three.
With the trade deadline looming tomorrow afternoon, we thought this one might be helpful for the the major league scouts and analytics department personnel from other organizations who read Reds Content Plus.
This is xwOBA for pitchers. xwOBA measures the quality of contact (weighted for power) given up to hitters and takes into account walks and strikeouts. The lower the number, the better. League average is .319.
First, the starting pitchers:
- .277 Sonny Gray
- .282 Luis Castillo
- .305 Anthony DeSclafani
- .315 Tyler Mahle
- .335 Tanner Roark
Worth noting that four of the Reds five starters have been better than average. Out of 144 pitchers with 250 plate appearances (about 5 per team), Sonny Gray ranks #12 and Luis Castillo #18. Tanner Roark comes in at #96.
Next, the relievers:
- .252 Amir Garrett
- .267 Robert Stephenson
- .283 Michael Lorenzen
- .296 David Hernandez
- .301 Jared Hughes
- .303 Raisel Iglesias
