The Reds finalized their Opening Day roster adding position players Matt Davidson and Christain Colon to the 30-man list.

Davidson and Colón had to be added to the team’s 40-man roster. Justin Shafer and Josh Smith were removed from that list.
Upfront, this is the best roster the Reds have fielded in years. Congrats to the Front Office for pulling it off. That said, I found some of the last roster decisions curious.
Even with a 30-man roster, I’m surprised we had 4 non-roster players make the opening day roster: Raley, Jones, Colon and Davidson.
– N. Jones was a good bet to make the 26-man in the Spring provided he was healthy … solid ML track record.
– Colon and Blandino profile similarly as hitters. Colon is a stronger SS and has WS experience, but will he be around in 2 weeks?
– Davidson and Aquino have similar profiles as hitters. Aquino’s September swoon has left the Reds skeptical enough to bring in Castellanos to start in RF and burn Aquino’s final “option” for the power-hitting Davidson. If Davidson beats up on LHP, he’ll be around for the duration.
– Nothing really stands out in Raley’s 5 years in Korea, yet he beat out Bowman who had an ERA+ of 125 last year along with Shaffer and Kuhnel, both of whom had positive results in MLB in 2019. This choice burned Bowman’s final “option” and resulted in Shaffer’s DFA. I look forward to seeing what the Reds may have discovered.
