RC+ Recap: Reds 3, Rockies 2

It wasn’t easy, but the Reds triumphed on Sunday to take a series victory from the Rockies. Cincinnati pitchers allowed multiple baserunners in six of nine inning but held a powerful Rockies offense to only two runs.

The bend-but-don’t-break performance started with Alex Wood, who made his Cincinnati debut after missing the first four months of the season. Wood’s knucklecurve/slider looked particularly sharp after such a long layoff, as he buried it low and away to his glove side consistently.

However, the southpaw struggled at times with fastball command and gave up seven hits in 4.2 innings. He gave up the only two runs of the day on a home run to Yonder Alonso.

Tucker Barnhart was the star of the day at the plate, reaching base in all four plate appearances while driving in two runs. Josh VanMeter continued to produce with a single and two walks. Barnhart and VanMeter combined to see 51 of the Rockies’ pitches, as both took excellent at-bats throughout the game.

Matt Wilkes got hooked on Reds baseball after attending his first game in Cinergy Field at 6 years old, and he hasn’t looked back. As a kid, he was often found imitating his favorite players — Ken Griffey Jr., Adam Dunn, Sean Casey, and Austin Kearns — in the backyard. When he finally went inside, he was leading the Reds to 162-0 seasons in MVP Baseball 2005 or keeping stats for whatever game was on TV. He started writing about baseball in 2014 and has become fascinated by analytics and all the new data in the game. Matt is also a graduate of The Ohio State University and currently lives in Chicago. VanMeter is making it hard to bench him.

Yes he is. And he’s making Scooter Gennett expendable. Maybe it’s more accurate to say that Derek Dietrich is making Gennett expendable. Lefty off the bench with pop. DD plays OF and 1B plus 2B and Gennett only plays 2B.
